Grind - new demo! (Dev Arena v0.6)

Yet another preview of "Grind" - the grown up brother of Amiga 500 Doom-clone "Dread" - just popped up on YouTube.

"Dread" was a super impressive project that spawned full-game-release project "Grind", and it's looking better than ever.

Here's the latest video, that was uploaded just minutes ago to famous retro-gaming channel Saberman RetroNews:

Grind - multiplayer!

Spectacular Amiga 500 OCS 7Mhz first person shooter "Grind" is boldly going serial-link multiplayer.

"Grind" has come a long way from the early "Dread" demos. It's becoming a super polished game, with tons of atmosphere, thanks to the fine tuned visuals, and sounds, and of course the stunningly fast Doom-like 3D graphics engine. And it's got what way too few Amiga games, especially first-person-shooter games, have: it's multiplayer!

A new demo has just been released that features the latest serial-link (nullmodem) program code, a set of options to make adjustments to the multiplayer game mode, two arenas for players to duel, and a round of other updates.

Here you can watch a video on "Saberman RetroNews" YouTube channel (2024-07-14):

Check YouTube's video description for more information.

Grind: new demo "Darkenward East v0.3"

More breaking news of Amiga gaming: Spectacular low-end first person shooter "Grind", formerly known as "Dread", just got a new demo release.

With a new name and new developer team, "Grind" is the overhauled and polished successor of "Dread", and now we can see (part of) what has been happening in the meantime. A new demo version of "Grind" just got released, and the results are stunning. It's currently only available for patreon supporters - but thanks to YouTube and famous retro gaming channel Saberman RetroNews we can watch a video and enjoy the outstanding diesel-punk look of playable demo level "Darkenward East".

Games galore #36: Red 41 The Silent Death, LUMA, Cecconoid (and Eugatron), Grind, Aquabyss

Previously unreleased games, ported games, spin-off games, in-game games, original games!

"Red 41 The Silent Death" by Digital Warp is an unfinished game that only got a preview back in 1993. Roughly thirty years later, then-developer-team-member Daniele Pomposelli has dug out the latest available version from his private archives.

Although incomplete - some fundamental game mechanics are missing in this alpha-version - it's a fantastic looking jump-and-run-and-gun game, somehow reminiscent of Turrican (of course) and maybe Breathless (if it had 2D side-view)?

Here's a video from Daniele Pomposelli's YouTube channel (2022-11-24):

LUMA

"LUMA" is an easy to learn, but increasingly challenging puzzle game. If you like this sort of game, this one will get you addicted immediately. It's a port of a C64 game by Shallan, in which you have to direct beams of light through tiled playfields containing obstacles.

A nice little tune is playing along as you push mirrors and the lights' power supplies around the playfield, graphics and sound are a nice Amiga-ish rendition of the original C64 game design, and somewhere around level 30 and up solving puzzles becomes genuinely hard brain-work. Very good!

Cecconoid (and Eugatron)

"Cybernoid" is a 1987 Hewson multi-screen shoot-em-up game that was released for many 8-bit platforms, Atari ST, and Amiga. "Cecconoid" is a 2019 game heavily inspired by "Cybernoid", available for Switch/Android/iOS/Windows/Linux, and should be ready for release on the Amiga quite soon!

According to the information available, it requires an Amiga with 1MB of RAM, will be distributed by Thalamus Digital, and will have a physical, boxed release.

Yeah, "Cecconoid" looks and sounds really nice, with its minimalist visual approach, detailed and dynamic mechanics, lots of action, and cool electro soundtrack. But not only that: another mini-arcade-game called "Eugatron" is included!

"Dread" becomes "Grind" (and stays "Dread")

Certainly among the most spectacular news for Amiga gamers during the last couple of years was this new Doom-clone game called "Dread" that runs (well) on an unexpanded 7MHz Amiga 500.

Well, it still does - but behind the scenes, around Oct. 2022, things have changed a little bit, with a new name for the upcoming game: Grind!

"Dread" will be continued as a non-commercial project by KK/Altair, while "Grind" is set to become a full, patreon-backed game developed by John Tsakiris.

Aquabyss

"Aquabyss" is a trading simulation set in the 19th century. It was released in Oct. 2022 by Aged Code, and is continuously being worked on.

Tons of beautiful graphics make this game a joy to watch, and you'll need plenty of time to fully explore it. "Aquabyss" requires 2MB ChipRAM, 8MB FastRAM and 15MB of harddisc space, but a faster CPU is recommended. It is playable without internet connection, but if available, updates can be received, and high-scores can be shared via game server.

Games galore #22: Exhumed, Dread (demo release), Henry's House, Krogharr, Polar Panic

Amiga game development is moving fast - so are we: this time we have two first person shooters, a port of an 8-bit platformer, a new fighting game by the author of "Invyya", and another new jump and run game.

Exhumed

Recently, a couple of PC games based on the "Build" 3d engine were ported to the Amiga - on of which is 1997 PC first person shooter game "Exhumed", also known as "Powerslave".

Well, what can u say - great stuff! Ancient Egypt is a nice subject for a game, and from an Amigan's point of view this is next-level first person shooter gaming finally making it's way to the Amiga (along with DREAD, Blood, and others) on a regular basis. It requires a fast CPU (68040/68060/FPGA/Emu), AGA, 16MB RAM, harddisc, Kickstart 3.0 or higher, and some data files from the PC version (see links below).

Watch a video of "Exhumed" on Amiga Fan's YouTube channel (2021-05-06):

You can download "Exhumed" ("Powerslave") for Amiga from AmiNet:

Dread demo released

Yeah, you heard the news, it's on facebook, it's on YouTube, it's pretty much everywhere: DREAD demo is out!

Now you can more or less play Doom on your 7Mhz OCS 512KB Amiga 500. It's amazing, and not much more has to be said about this great project by KK/Altair.

Here's a video of DREAD running on several different Amiga configurations from 68010 to 68040 (2021-09-27):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRFaX3HJtHk

You can download the demo (ADF and executable, zipped) from KK's website: http://devkk.net/Dread-1905-Amiga.zip

Henry's House

...is a conversion of an 8-bit (C64, Atari) platform game from 1984 that got very positive reviews.

You control Little Henry, climbing ladders, jumping around, collecting things, and avoiding obstacles. The game has some visual similarities with maybe Donkey Kong, or titles like that, and adds a couple of nice effects on top.

Thanks to coder Marecheck / MC Studio it's now available for the Amiga.

Here's a video of "Henry's House" from conversion author Marecheck's YouTube channel (2021-05-06):

"Krogharr" announced

In May 2021 the author of Inviyya announced a new project for OCS Amigas that goes by the name of "Krogharr". It's a fighting game in development, that seems to sit somewhere near Golden Axe and Barbarian II. Only static graphics have been shown so far - but these look pretty amazing, with detailed, manga-esque game characters, somehow watercolor-style background graphics, and a lo-fi, atmospheric color palette. Judging from the reviews Inviyya got, this will be another great game by Tigerskunk.

Polar Panic

Remarkably detailed sprite graphics, and a seriously groovy soundtrack are two of the features of upcoming, work-in-progress jump'n'run game "Polar Panic".

Not too much is known about this project so far - the game uses the Scorpion engine, an early video has been released around mid-May 2021, and it looks quite promising!

Games galore #9: Dread (update), Super Wormy, Smarty and the Nasty Gluttons, Dragon Slayer

This time we have two classics revisited, and two previously unreleased games. It's always an especially pleasant surprise when Amiga developers get together to rebuild and release some forgotten project. Here we go!

"Dread" (update)

"Dread" certainly is one of the most exciting Amiga game projects of the COVID-19 era, and among the most exciting game projects on the Amiga ever. Yes, it's THAT epic. Ok, it's been more than 20 years, but there's still that exhilaratingly satisfying feeling when you know Amigans won the "Doom can't be done" cause, and "Dread" is the final strike. KK/Altair is still working on the engine, and keeping the public up to date with several videos, the latest of which shows him painstakingly optimizing the image conversion process in order to get better color palette distribution. Whatever the case, it's a fascinating look into game development, and how this one will once and for all put an end to all arguments: the Amiga IS superior to the Atari ST! ;-)

Super Wormy

"Snake" is one of those classic games that'll never get old, and "Super Wormy" is a new variation of the concept. Written by Rob "Coagulus" Hewitt in BlitzBasic during the (first) Corona virus lockdown period, "Super Wormy" is a neat looking, smooth scrolling snake-type game, with an amazing, weirdly hypnotic soundtrack - straightforward arcade fun for gamers of all ages!

Smarty and the Nasty Gluttons

"Smarty and the Nasty Gluttons" is a super good looking, nicely animated, beautiful sounding game for kids and adults alike. It combines elements of a platformer with BombJack and DigDug, and does so with lovely handpainted screens, gorgeous sprites, transition effects, intro animation, and so on. The game mechanics are slightly more elaborate than usual, this looks like great fun to play, and the overall production quality easily meets professional standards.

The project dates back to 1992 when the original developers were unable to publish the game. Recently, the source code has been reviewed, and the full game completed. There are also plans to release the sourcecode, and create a physical package gamers can purchase. "Smarty and the Nasty Gluttons" requires an OCS Amiga with 1MB RAM and Kickstart 1.2, or better. And it's free for you to download (see link below) - great stuff!

Dragon Slayer

With some impressive graphics and realistic sound effects "Dragon Slayer" almost enters horror game territory. There's not much missing and this game should be able to create some serious atmosphere in your darkened livingroom. It combines platformer and adventure elements with boss fighting sequences, and the game is said to have quite a large area to explore, consisting of hundreds of locations.

The game was initially developed by Christian Haller, to be released by Linel software in 1990, but is now being rebuilt and planned to be published for the first time. Check out these amazing sprites and GELs. Gods meets Barbarian meets... Space Harrier?
