AmigaOS 3.2.1 is out!

Great news from the operating system side of Amiga things: Hyperion has released AmigaOS update 3.2.1, for registered users, and for free.

In a press release published on 21st Dec. 2021 the availability of the first update to AmigaOS 3.2 was announced, along with a list of highlighted features:

• Fixes to almost every single gadget and image class
• Fix to clipboard.device that since AmigaOS 3.1.4 would not handle clips above 16KB in some cases
• Important fix to locale.library that would convert signed values to unsigned
• New IconEdit with support for colorful icons (like the “GlowIcons”)
• TextEdit has gained an ARexx port per open document
• ShowConfig had its GUI reworked, and can now make reports in AmigaGuide format
• The RAM disk linking feature have been changed a bit so it seems more like AmigaOS 3.1.4 while still being copy on read as in AmigaOS 3.2
• Dropping files on console will now activate the console window
• The screen will no longer remain black if you start up without any attached drive
• Eject menu item in Workbench

AmigaOS 3.2 Native Developer Kit updated, rel. 3

Hyperion and the team of AmigaOS 3.2 developers show their dedication with an updated release of the Native Developer Kit.

The new NDK was released on June 30th 2021. According to the file description, it improves compatibility with different compiler environments. Also there seem to be "strategic" changes, simplifying future updates (see "ReadMe" picture below).

Probably not directly related to the NDK's contents, but also mentioned in the file details is what appears to be a new strategy of distribution with wider availability through additional sources.

An odd feature of this latest release (just like rel. 2) might be that it's incomplete by design (see "ReadMe" picture below), and it speaks of a "worthwhile endeavour" of "seeking out on earlier NDKs" - umh, maybe not exactly "worthwhile". (But we've done the work for you, see link at end of article.)

Whatever the case, this is certainly another welcome update, and a must-have for all Amiga developers.

AmigaOS 3.1.4.1 update released

Hyperion Entertainment CVBA show their commitment to AmigaOS: Today an update for AmigaOS 3.1.4 has been released, fixing some bugs, and adding some new features.

According to Hyperion's press release (see "Sources" below) this update aims to improve user experience and adds more workarounds to improve compatibility with existing software.

It's mainly a bugfix update to AmigaOS 3.1.4, but there are also a couple of new features:

• Danish and swedish translations
• Setpatch updated
• Audio.device compatibility improved
• HDToolBox improved (default blocksize for large harddrives)
• CrossDOS compatibility improved

The complete list of bug fixes is considerably longer, Hyperion says the change log is more than 260KB in size. Changes include: updates to CDFileSystem, intution support, audio device, Format, FastFileSystem, HDToolBox, Shell, several AmigaDOS commands, DiskDoctor, and more.

"Shogo: Mobile Armor Division" available as digital download

Oh, that's a nice one: "Shogo: Mobile Armor Division", one of the best FPS games ever for the Amiga, originally released in 2001 (for the Amiga) can now be purchased as digital download.

"Shogo: Mobile Armor Division" was initially released for Windows in 1998, and was one of a couple of ambitious ports to the Amiga platform done by Hyperion. The digital download is only 14.95EUR, and you need a next-gen Amiga running AmigaOS4.1 or some decent - in other words: PowerPC - AmigaOS3 hardware to run the game.

This re-release apparently isn't motivated by a change in the legal situation between Hyperion / Itec / Amiga Inc. / Cloanto / ... , but a poll held by Hyperion via facebook.

Rise of the undead: AmigaOS 3.1.4 released

In Amigaland, 3.1.4 comes after 3.9: 18 years have passed since the last update of AmigaOS3 - since yesterday you can purchase a new release, AmigaOS 3.1.4!

Gathering information from various sources (see end of article) it's assumed it has these features:

• Support for large harddisks (HD_SCSI_CMD, TD_64 and/or NSD) and "super floppies"
• Support for long filenames, pipes, softlinks, hardlinks
• "DiskDoctor" program is back, upgraded and matured, recovers data from damaged floppies and harddisks
• Native support for 68000-68060 CPUs, and a more robust auto-configuration process
• many ROM modules and CLI/shell commands bugfixed and updated
• Workbench updated, new Preferences editors in GadTools style, printer drivers and support tools updated
• "edit" and "MagTape" removed
• CrossDOS and CD-ROM filesystem updated, including multithreading and support for Rockridge, Joliet and UDF
• new professionally designed iconsets (multicolor, classic 4-color)
• new intuition.library provides window off-screen dragging (optional)
• workbench.library and icon.library loaded from disk due to increased size

No screenshots or reviews have surfaced yet. Judging from AmigaOS 3.1.4's features, it's unlikely it will run on 512K Amigas, but contrary to OS3.5 and OS3.9 the 68000 CPU is still officially supported. Also it looks like this version is meant to replace the OS3.5/OS3.9 branch of AmigaOS, though with a little work it's still possible to keep your existing OS3.5/OS3.9 installation intact, if you prefer.

In other words:

You can buy AmigaOS 3.1.4 from Hyperion as digital download now!

A physical set of 3,5" floppy diskettes and ROMs will be available shortly.
